WATER quality experts have condemned water on Irvine’s coast for failing to meet minimum EU standards - even though it passed last year. But the verdict comes in a year that saw the number of failing beaches soar from seven to 18 with the Marine Conservation blaming an increase in storm pollution caused by Scotland’s wettest summer for 30 years.

CHILD ABUSE ACCUSED'S CELL SUICIDE

A PRISONER accused of child sex abuse hanged himself with cable given to him by staff, a court heard this week. Stewart McBlain, 67, was on voluntary “double protection” and only left his cell when other inmates at Kilmarnock Prison were locked up in theirs. Two days after being remanded in custody he was found hanged with a ligature made from shoe laces and cable supplied for his TV aerial.

Now officers are hunting the teenage thugs who surrounded and battered the lad outside Irvine train station in the broad daylight - and they say there must be witnesses.
