FOOTBALL BANTER LED TO VIOLENCE
A BIT of banter about football on the night Scotland were beaten by Italy ended up in a vicious attack by a stepfather on his stepson.

OVER two hundred Springside pupils, parents and residents marched on Council headquarters last week as they took their fight against school closure to the streets. The Save Springside School campaign marched through Irvine to Cunninghame House last Wednesday armed with banners, songs and slogans to hand over a specially made hand-print petition, signed by children from the village.

CUT TOP BOSSES NOT WARDENS SAYS PROVOST
CUTS should hit senior council officers rather than workers providing key services, according to Provost Bobby Rae. The SNP member told a packed meeting against the proposed withdrawal of the warden service that the “top tier” of management should be the focus for cuts.

FORMER IRVINE MSP CHARGED WITH PERJURY
FORMER Irvine socialist MSP Rosemary Byrne has been charged with perjury. The former school teacher was arrested and charged by Lothian and Borders Police looking into allegations of perjury during fellow Solidarity leader Tommy Sheridan’s libel trial against the News of the World.

Abandoned - Sheltered Housing Wardens scrapped
WORRIED Sheltered Housing residents and their families have blasted a decision to scrap wardens who man the complexes across Irvine and Kilwinning. The Times spoke to residents of one Irvine complex who were adamant that everyone living in sheltered housing needed the help of the wardens.

IRVINE WOMAN SHOWERED IN GLASS
COPS are hunting a teenager who showered a woman with glass when he smashed two windows of her house. The 57-year-old woman was on the computer in her living room when the unexpected attack took place. Her dwelling house in Townhead, Irvine was targeted on Saturday 2 February at 10.30pm.

COUNCIL TAX FREEZE - BUT CUTS FOR OAPS AND KIDS
THE LONG-EXPECTED freeze on Council Tax arrived this week but the good news was tempered by massive cuts across education and social services. North Ayrshire Council agreed to a three-year freeze on Council Tax level - subject to further financial support from the Scottish Government - at last week’s budget meeting. The only controversial decision questioned by either side of the council was that of scrapping Sheltered Housing Wardens - a decision carried by a close 16-14 vote in favour of the cut.

SCHOOLS AND OAPS FACE £5m BUDGET CUT
EDUCATION and social services could be set for over £5m worth of cuts this year as councillors meet to decide this year’s budget. While most of the attention has been on the mooted Council Tax freeze, rents will continue to rise and cutbacks will be made in services if councillors give the go ahead on Thursday. The council would retain a surplus of around £10m if the budget is given the green light.
