Arrow Council feels the crunch as £25m axe falls

THE CREDIT crunch bit hard in Norh Ayrshire this week as it emerged council chiefs have been forced to scrap half of their building programme for this year. The "rephasing" of £25m worth of capital plans includes postponing £1m of funding for the renovation of Irvine's Town House, £6.334m for the devlopment of Montgomerie Park, the £200,000 extension of Knadgerhill Cemetery and £1.3m for regeneration projects across the area.

A KILWINNING bookie scammed almost £2,000 by placing bets after she knew the winners. Michelle Hughs, of Ninian's Terrace, had been working at Coral bookmakers in Dalry as assistant manger for around six months when she was caught embezzling £1, 937.20 in December.

IN an astonishing meeting on Tuesday all of the Irvine schools threatened with closure were saved. Tense parents arrived at Cunninghame House to await the verdict of the future of Towerlands and John Galt Primary Schools, with Springside all but secured. Many had believed that John Galt would be the one school of the three to be doomed to closure. However, in an neck-and-neck vote the Vineburgh school was saved after Provost Bobby Rae made his casting vote count.
