KNIFE THUG GANG GET 28 YEARS
By by court reporter
A judge told the Kilwinning trio at the High Court in Edinburgh that he wanted to reassure the public such crimes would be treated 'very seriously'.
Lord Nimmo Smith jailed William Chapman, 34, of Enterkine Square, for 12 years. His accomplices - Paul Kerr, 34, of Sundrum Place and 20-year-old William Clarke, of Culzean Place - for nine and seven years respectively.
He said: `There is, of course, great public concern about alcohol fuelled crime in Scotland, about the use of knives to commit crime and about the commission of serious offences in the public streets.`
The court earlier heard the men chased the victim David Barr at Stobbs Terrace, Kilwinning, on May 20, repeatedly struck him on the neck and body with a knife and repeatedly punched and kicked him after he fell to the ground.
He suffered four knife wounds to his chest and a collapsed lung.
All three men were found guilty of trying to murder Mr Barr by assaulting him to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
