Grave robbers hunted by cops
By Kevin Dyson
GRAVESIDE robberies which were left unreported by grieving Kilwinning families are now being investigated by police, thanks to the Times.
Last week, the Times reported that ornaments, trinkets and other personal items left by mourners at Kilwinning Cemetery had been robbed by heartless thieves.
Erin Bradford, who left items such as teddy bears at her father’s graveside was left upset when they started to disappear.
Her disgusted Aunt Mhairi Bradford told us: “People have told me they’ve had wreaths and things stolen for years but because he hasn’t been that cemetery for long this is the first time we’ve witnessed it.”
However, the girl’s Aunt, Mhairi Bradford told us that a number of wreaths, flowers and gifts had been stolen from other graves.
At the time police said that no reports of thefts had been made to them, but thanks to an appeal investigations are now underway with two reports being made to police over the past week.
PC Tony Harkin, of Irvine Community Police, told the Times: “In response to last weeks appeal we have received reports of two thefts of graveside ornaments at Kilwinning Cemetery.”
One incident took place towards the end of January, with the second taking place between 10am on February 2 and 10am the following day.
PC Harkin added: “These items aren’t high value. However, their theft causes distress to the families and people involved.
“Investigations are now taking place into these thefts and I would encourage people to come forward if they have any information on these incidents.”
Anyone with any information should call PC Grant McCormack on 404400.
