A BRAVE Kilwinning wife has donated more than half of her liver to her husband in Scotland’s first ever live liver transplant.

Jennifer Foster, 26, underwent the ten-hour operation to save husband Daniel - after he was told he may only have a year to live.

The student veterinary nurse, who married New Zealander Daniel in May last year, said: “I’m elated that this operation has been a success.

“We have been able to save Dan’s life.”

The couple underwent the pioneering double operation, one of only a handful ever to be done in Britain, at Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary on January 16 and both are now making a good recovery.

But 28-year-old Daniel could have lost his life when the chronic liver he had suffered for over ten years worsened after his wedding in Fiji last year.

He was listed for a liver transplant but did not hear of any potential donors - so he was forced to ask his new wife.

He said: “It’s an impossible thing to be asked to do. But Jen said to me, ‘If the shoe was on the other foot, what would you do?’. I would have done it in a heartbeat,”

And the pair now look set to have a happy life together.

Masseur Daniel said: “Through the new courage and love of my wife, I’ve been given a new chance at life. I can’t wait to start living the years ahead with her.”
