WARDENS TO STAY TILL SUMMER

By Kevin Dyson

DESPITE assertions from the council that the wardens service would be scrapped on April 1 many wardens will remain in employment until the middle of June.

While the decision to scrap the service was taken at the beginning of February, Social Services bosses only issued notice of termination dates at the weekend, with a notice period of 12 weeks for the longest serving wardens taking them up to the 9th June.

There have been accusations amongst some residents that the move proves that the council does not expect to have its new system in place by the cut off date at the end of the month.

A note to wardens from Personnel Adviser Tommy Drain reads: “Staff are expected to continue to work to the end of their notice period.

“This means, for example, that if you have 16 years of continuous service you will continue in your post until 9th June 2008.

“This means that although the Wardens Service formally ends on the 31st March 2008 you will remain in post until the end of your notice period to provide an interim service until full implementation of the Alert service in your area.”

However, the Times understands that a number of wardens will only have to work notice until the middle of April meaning that those staying on will be spread across the 27 units across North Ayrshire.
