"New" Magnum could cost £22m

A REPLACEMENT for the ailing Magnum Leisure Centre could cost £22 million if, as expected, the 30-year-old building is scrapped.

The proposal is one of three being examined by bosses at North Ayrshire Leisure and the council. Other options are to retain the building or to close it without a replacement.

However, it is understood that leaving the town without a leisure facility has been deem inviable.

Figures seen by the Times state that it will cost in the region of £5m over the next three to four years simply to maintain the crumbling building. Further investment would be required on top of this while costs would increase.

Should a decision be made to keep the building open, it is likely that a further review would be required in the next six years or so.

It is understood that a brand new Irvine centre would cost up to £22m, although running costs would be reduced due to the smaller scale of any new project and more efficiency.

The Magnum was once a great facility for Irvine and for thousands of visitors...who closed the flumes and let it crumble?? Repair the building and give it a proper swimming pool..gives us a proper cinema...let the Magnum bring life back to the beach park and harbour. It can never be replaced anywhere else. 5 million is nothing compared to the 60 million they want to throw away on an unwanted golf course!

Save the Magnum.
