BRAVE Irvine baby Sophie Malcolmson was born with a rare disorder that meant she could not swallow food.

Now her family - once told by doctors that she might not pull through - are beaming with pride as their little girl eats porridge and yoghurts.

And they can't thank hospital staff enough, with Sophie's dad Scott, grand-dad Richard and friends climbing Ben Nevis to raise funds for them.

Dad Scott told the Times: "The day she was born she was so small they took her to intensive care.

"They took us to the side and told us she was having trouble getting milk down so she was transferred from Crosshouse to Yorkhill."

Scott and Sophie's mum Stacy Allison stayed with while she was at the Glasgow hospital for seven weeks of treatment.

However, when she got home it was discovered that she still had trouble eating and she was returned for a further three weeks of treatment.

She is now a healthy 14-month-old and the family have done their bit to say thanks to the hospital - raising around £4,500 through the Ben Nevis trek.
