THE parents of Kilwinning Big Brother favourite Mikey Hughes have spoke of their shock at seeing him reach the house - but now he is there they are hoping everyone in the area will get right behind him.

Grant and Mary Hughes are slowly adjusting to the fact their boy is a daily fixture on our television screens but admit they eagerly tune in to keep up to date with his progress.

Proud mum Mary explained: “We knew he’d had auditions but we were still really surprised to learn he’d made it into the house. The first we knew of it was the night before it started when we got a phone call from Channel 4 telling us he was going in.

“We watch it every night and so far he seems to be coping well.”

The former St. Luke’s and St. Michael’s pupil has entertained the nation with his witty outbursts but Grant and Mary are just happy he is being himself.

“That’s just Michael,” says Grant. “There’s no acting on his part and he’s just a genuinely nice guy.

“My only concern will be when he comes out of the house because I don’t think he’ll realise how much attention he’ll get. He will be shocked at that.”

Mikey took part in this week’s unsuccessful crisp-licking task as he and fellow housemates failed to accurately divide 6,250 grams of crisps into their four respective flavours.

The 33-year-old caused some controversy amongst housemates by sneezing over the crisps and will be hoping they don’t hold it against him by nominating him for eviction this week.

Meanwhile Grant and Mary hope he will be given more time in the house, so he can continue his popular diary room exploits.

“He’s so funny when he goes into that diary room,” admits Grant.

“One night he was in there and he couldn’t stop laughing - and we couldn’t stop laughing watching him!

“He’s great at getting his message across and very open when he’s in there.

“Hopefully everyone will give him their support so he can stay in the house for a bit longer.”
