Daring Kilwinning pair's mountain marathon drama
By John-Martin Fulton
TWO best friends from Kilwinning had to the spend night on a rain-lashed mountainside after flash floods hit the Lake District endurance race they running, stranding hundreds of competitors.
More than 1700 were classed as missing in the chaos caused when more than a month’s rain fell on the Cumbrian fells during the Original Mountain Marathon on Saturday. And now two brave dads from Kilwinning have told the Times how they survived the ordeal.
Signmaker Scott McKendrick, 38, said he and pal Tom Begley had to wade through waist heigh water and ‘actually crawl’ as high winds threatened to knock them over a mountain ridge.
The pair, who have been friends since meeting at Kilwinning Academy, are experienced climbers and have run the two-day race as a team for the past eight years but this time they were forced to separate.
