Spanish scam will cause a lotto worry
By John-Martin Fulton
A CONCERNED Irvine resident who received a letter saying he’d won £485000 is warning people to watch out for the scam that could cause misery to old and vulnerable people.
The Bourtreehill man, who asked to remain anonymous, got a letter telling him he’d scooped a share of a 10 million euro jackpot in the Spanish Lottery even though he had never entered.
The trick letter came from fraudsters claiming to be lottery-runners El Gordo who instructed him to keep his win ‘top secret’ until it had been processed.
He knew right away it was a trick but wanted to warn other Times readers to save them from being conned into shelling out cash.
He said: “The letter is supposed to be worth about half a million but for me it’s just recycling paper.
“I’d hate to think of other people getting the letter and being conned into paying out money to receive their prize. Because we all know there is no prize.
