AN IRVINE politician is backing a campaign to save babies" lives amid shocking figures of infant mortality.

MP Brian Donhoe has joined stillbirth charity SANDS to ask: 'Why do 17 babies die every single day in the UK?'

And, as the "Why 17?" campaign is launched, the SANDS has also published new research highlighting key areas contributing to the level of baby loss and recommending changes that could save many of the babies" lives.

Mr Donohoe said: 'It"s a shocking statistic, and what"s more there are strong indications that significant numbers of these 17 deaths could be avoided and babies" lives saved, and if that"s the case then I certainly believe it should be high up on our agenda as a nation.'
