THAT FIRDAY FEELING FOR MEADOW
By Stewart McConnell
BACKED by a noisy 2000-strong blue and white army of fans travelling in 20 supporters buses, trains and cars IRVINE MEADOW will try to make history on Friday night by reaching their first OVD Scottish Cup final in 33 years.
As the clock ticked down on the semi-final showdown with East Coast big guns Bathgate Thistle at Glasgow’s Firhill Stadium, manager Chris Strain and players Jimmy Noble and Gareth Turner are all quietly confident they can progress to the final of the Junior game’s blue riband competition.
Strain, who had Bathgate watched on Saturday as they went down 3-2 to Tayport in a league game. is calling on his players to stay calm.
Meadow went into the biggest clash in their recent history by defeating Dalry Thistle 5-1 away in the Stagecoach Ayrshire District League game on Saturday.
The manager, who only took charge late last season said after that game: “The players shouldn’t treat it as if it’s the last game they’ll ever play. We are a couple of years ahead of where I expected us to be but we are here and it would be great to reach the final where we would hopefully play Auchinleck Talbot if they can win their semi-final next week.”
