The 40-year-old one-time Marress favourite won the Irvine Links Championship for the first time, defeating clubmate Darren Mallinson (22) one up in an absorbing final played in brilliant sunshine.
Gibson made a tremendous start and was four-up on his opponent. However the younger man dug deep into his reserves and staged a determined fightback which saw him square the match by the 14th hole.
At the par four final hole both players found the green with their second shots but Mallinson missed a nine-foot birdie putt. However Gibson won in sensational style by sinking a birdie putt from fully 25 feet.
