MEADOW MAGIC DEFEATS THISTLE
By Stewart McConnell
A STUNNING late wind-assisted strike from inspirational midfielder Andy Essler saw resilient Meadow come from behind to sting Thistle and soar into top spot in the Super First Division.
While the conditions put paid to their customary stylish passing game and this was not pretty the most important thing is that Chris Strain’s battlers ground out the victory, their seventh out of nine to take them ahead of Troon in goal difference with three games in hand and very much in the driving seat.
Sometimes in football, as in other sports you have to win ugly and sacrifice style for efficiency as last year’s Stagecoach Ayrshire District League champions did on Saturday.
The boss had no doubt about the importance of the win.
He said: “The wind made it really difficult out there but we got the win and this is the kind of victory which can win you championships. It was a tough game but we worked hard and deserved the win.”
