VINEBURGH Boxing Club continued its year of success with student Robert McLaughlin picking up the University Championship of Scotland in Dundee at the weekend.

The 21-year-old Strathclyde University student powered his way to victory stopping opponents from St. Andrew’s University and the University of Aberdeen.

Vineburgh Boxing coach Alec Mullen told SportTimes: “It is good to see one of the older lads doing well. Robert is a fit lad and it’s amazing to think he has only been fighting for a short time and was a late starter.

“He was also voted Best Boxer at the tournament which is great.”

He will now go on to fight at the British University Championships at Sheffield in March.

A mix of young and older boxers will carry the Vineburgh flag in Airdie and Shotts this week. Young John Grier fights alongside 24-year-old Steven McCairns on Wednesday and Jamie Kerr and Corey Roberts take to the ring on Friday in Shotts.

Alec himself heads out to Denmark this week, as his son Alec Jr fights for the first time out of Scotland. We will have more of the action in next weeks SportTimes.
