National Glory For Hilland

HEROIC defender Paul Hilland netted the decisive goal from the penalty spot as Junior Scotland won the Umbro Quadrangular Tournament on the Isle of Man on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against the Republic of Ireland - and now set his sights on helping Irvine Meadow land the Stagecoach Super League Premier Division title.

The 24-year-old had to overcome a major personal drama before before lining up in the second and third games of the Round Robin event after a car crash saw him miss the opening 4-3 win against Northern island last Wednesday.

Hilland, in his first season at Meadow Park, after signing up from Arthurlie, told Sporttimes: "I had to miss the first game after we were involved in a cra crash on Wednesday on the morning on the way to Glasgow Airport.

"My girlfriend was driving when someone smashed into the side of us.

"She got a sore one with badly bruised ribs and we spent most of the day in hospital, but she is fine now."

He went on: "I flew over on Wednesday night and I played in the second game (won 2-3 by the Scots) against the Isle of Man and the last game.

"I was delighted we won but we deserved it. I wasn't nervous at all and smashed the penalty straight down the line. There was a great spirit in the squad and it was graet to be part of it."

Hilland's Meadow team mate Mark crilly played part of the Northern Irelnad game but was injured and taken off.

Now the Scotland hero, who has been capped four times for his country, is focusing on trying to help Meadow land Premier Division title as they gear up for their two games against closest challengers Glenafton Athletic on Wednesday and Pollock on Saturday.
