KILWINNING RANGERS 2 EAST KILBRIDE THISTLE 0

IMPRESSIVE Buffs strengthened their promotion credentials as their unbeaten league run stretched to FOURTEEN games following this well-earned win against the Lanarkshire visitors.

It left them just two points adrift of second-place Vale of Clyde, over whom they have two games in hand.

East Kilbride with the wind behind them took the game to Kilwinning in the early stages.

With 12 minutes on the clock James Strain had the chance to put the visitors ahead but shot wide of the far post. Five minutes later a 25-yard shot from East Kilbride's Jamie Brophy was turned over the bar by Keith Ross.

Kilwinning began to take control of the midfield and a neat move between Nikki Smityh and George Wallace saw the latter shoot wide.

Play raged from end to end but neither side could find the elusive first goal.

Kilwinning broke the deadlock two minutes after the interval after the interval when Stephen Reid chased a ball to the goal line and cut the ball back for Jeff Howe to net from six yards.

Play was mostly towards the East Kilbride goal for a spell but the home forwards found keeper Chris Wilson on top form.

It took a brave save by Keith Ross at the feet of Michael Smith to keep an equaliser out.

Two saves by Wilson in the 50th and 67th minutes prevented goals from substitute Gary Broadfield and Derek McCulloch.

With 12 minutes remaining Kilwinning got the second goal they badly needed to make the match. A Smith shot was stopped but Gary Broadfield was on hand to net the rebound.

After coming so close to promotion last season, Buffs are looking a good bet to make at this time.
