Strain wields the axe
By Stewart McConnell
FRUSTRATED Irvine Meadow boss Chris Strain is wielding the axe on his underachievers who ended a season which promised so much trophyless - with no fewer than SEVEN players heading for the exit door.
It is a major about turn from the Meadow Park gaffer, who had initially said only minor changes were needed in the squad with his hand being forced following the poor performance in the Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup semi-final defeat at the hands of derby rivals Kilwinning Rangers.
Strain this week confirmed that midfield playmaker Andy Essler is up for transfer, along with Shaun Dillon, Billy Mason, Paul Hilland and Charlie Adams.
Former skipper Billy Mason and Dougie Ramsay are both leaving, whilst Gary McPhee is looking set to sign for Auchinleck Talbot.
Strain, whose side finished runners-up in the Stagecoach Super League Premier Division, told Sporttimes on Friday: "I had been expecting to just bring in three or four new faces but it could well be seven or eight and we are actively seeking new players now.
"I decided after the Kilwinning Rangers game that changes would have to be made. "
Glenafton Athletic duo Chic Connolly and Frank Haggerty have both agreed deals and Strain is also hoping to bring in former Ayr United striker John Bradford.
The Meadow boss is also hopeful of bringing in Auchinleck Talbot wideman Paul Hyslop and Pollock right-sided midfielder Zander Ryan.
