POLICE have reminded people to use the 101 number to report incidents of concern, following a strange episode in Irvine town centre.
Crowds of teenagers were sent scattering from the Volunteer Rooms around 9pm last Sunday, bringing a halt to traffic and leaving witnesses dazed and confused.
One man who was driving along East Road at the time described seeing a crowd of 20 or 30 youths "come flying from the High Street like a tsunami".
He said: "They all ignored the traffic lights and pedestrian crossings and just came tearing across the road through traffic, with cars blaring their horns.
"We passed the Volunteer Rooms and saw another crowd of youngsters standing around like they were waiting for something. I don't know what.
"We saw two police vans heading into the Volunteer Rooms and it looked like they were dealing with it, but I thought I might have seen something in the paper about it." When approached for comment, a spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "About 2100 hours on Sunday, July 28, Police Scotland received reports of a disturbance involving about 20 youths in the area of the Volunteer Rooms, Parterre, Irvine. Officers attended and the youths dispersed, no arrests were made.
"Members of the local community are urged to report incidents to Police by calling 101 (always dial 999 in an emergency)."
