POLICE have identified a man whose body was found in the River Irvine last week.

He has now been identified as a 52-year-old man from Galston. Police Scotland said a post-mortem examination had been carried out and the man’s death was not being treated as suspicious.

The Irvine Times told last week how the grim discovery was made under the Shewalton Bridge in Irvine on Monday, October 7.

Emergency services from Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue, Scottish Ambulance Service and Ardrossan Coastguard raced to the scene immediately after receiving the report.

They were on the scene for several hours scouring the area extensively and cordoned off the surrounding area in Long Drive. News of the discovery quickly spread throughout social media sites Twitter and Facebook and a crowd of concerned locals gathered at the scene.

As a result, police were forced to extend their cordon area in order to disperse the crowd.
