IRVINE'S Magnum Leisure Centre has installed a new synthetic football pitch despite the fact it is set to close.

Owners KA Leisure have purchased a new 3G Astroturf pitch for the Magnum's indoor five-a-side hall even though it is due to be replaced by a new multi-million pound leisure centre in the middle of the town.

The new investment has raised eyebrows amongst locals as the construction of the controversial new centre is already underway with the Magnum set to close in 2015.

The decision to shut the Magnum has been met with vocal opposition from a large number of Irvine residents who have expressed their concerns about problems with car parking, traffic and safety.

KA Leisure refused to give an exact figure on the cost of the pitch, saying they couldn't due to a commercial confidentially agreement. Other minor refurbishment work has been carried out within the building including new paint work.

Despite its impending closure, visitor numbers to the Magnum have increased over the last few months and free swimming for kids will return to the centre next summer.

The five-a-side hall has been closed for several days while the installation has taken place but is scheduled to re-open today (Wednesday, December 18) for public use.

Scott Morrison from KA Leisure has defended the investment and insists they are still looking to attract people to visit the Magnum.

He said: "Although the Magnum Leisure Centre is due to be replaced in 2015, we are still open for business and KA Leisure will continue to invest in all our facilities including the Magnum albeit on a limited scale, to improve the service provided, increase customer visits and maximise income.

"The new indoor five-a-side 3G Synthetic surface will open later this week providing local teams the opportunity to play on a quality surface regardless of the weather conditions. Bookings can be made at any of our sites or online at www.kaleisure.com.

"We're involved in a scheme with the company who have installed the pitch called spend to generate which will hopefully see the cost recouped within the next three to four months.

"We may still invest into the Magnum but there is nothing further at the moment. We're still looking to try and attract more people to the centre, use the facilities and make it an enjoyable experience."
