SHOPPERS are being urged to be on their guard this Christmas after a spate of handbag thefts in Ayrshire.
Police have issued a warning to anyone carrying a bag, purse or wallet, urging them to be vigilant after a number of reported thefts in towns across the county.
Police say the people involved in this type of crime often work as part of a team – and they can be very skilled at what they do.
They have issued advice on what to do when you’re out doing your Christmas shopping this festive season.
When you are out and about:
• Keep your handbag on you, zipped with no valuable items on display (this includes your mobile phone).
• Do not leave it unattended.
• Carry your handbag close to your body.
• Never leave your bag or purse in a trolley or shopping basket.
• Do not carry large amounts of cash with you. Withdraw only money needed at the time.
• Be mindful of distractions, thieves working in pairs may attempt to divert your attention in order to steal your handbag or its contents.
• Attach your purse to your handbag with a secure cord or attach a bell to your purse to warn you should someone make an attempt to steal from you.
If you see anything suspicious while out shopping, you should speak to store staff and call Police Scotland on 101 (always dial 999 in an emergency).
