AN Irvine charity shop - and two of its volunteers - celebrated a special anniversary this week.

Monday, April 18 marked 28 years since Oxfam opened its store in Irvine High Street.

And from that day onwards volunteers Lena Ross and Joan Robertson have been working in the store.

The pair were the first to sign up and kindly offer their services to Oxfam, linking up with the charity before the store even opened.

Oxfam in the High Street relies on volunteers to keep the shop profitable – ensuring it contributes to Oxfam’s fight against poverty. In the 28 years since it opened its doors, the Irvine shop has made over £1.5 million in sales.

Speaking this week, Lena said: “It has been a wonderful 28 years volunteering for Oxfam. I can remember being in the shop for two weeks before it opened in 1988, getting everything ready.

“When I look back I wonder where the time has gone. At first I came in to do a couple of afternoons a week – before long I was running the shop!

“I don’t regret a day of it. I’ve met so many wonderful people over the years – but only Joan and I have been here since before day one.”

Brenda Walton, Area Manager for Oxfam Trading in the West of Scotland, said: “We are so grateful to Lena, Joan and all of our shop volunteers for the work they do to contribute to Oxfam’s fight against poverty.

“But we really need more volunteers to help us make the most of the fantastic stock we’ve got, and make as much money as possible for Oxfam’s work. Whether it’s working on the shop floor and till, sorting stock, or applying any expertise they might have, we’d be grateful for any time that volunteers can give.”

Whether you’ve got plenty of time to spare or just a few hours, the Oxfam shop in Irvine wants to hear from you.

Giving up your time is only part of the story – volunteering with Oxfam is a great way to build your skills and confidence, make friends as part of a team, and of course to play your part in Oxfam’s global mission to end poverty.
