AN Irvine shopkeeper has had his trading licence suspended after being convicted of drink driving.

Pavita Shergill, of Bank Street, was fined £500 and banned for three years at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on January 18 after being caught over the limit.

The 50-year-old faced a hearing at the North Ayrshire Council Licensing Board on Monday, April 18.

On January 15, Shergill tested 56 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 mililitres of breath - exceeding the 22 microgrammes limit - after being caught driving his van on the A71 in Irvine.

Since 2005, Shergill has run a shop in Galston and his representative, Mr Russell, said a host of personal issues seriously affected Shergill during this time and was sorry for his actions.

However, Shergill failed to report his conviction to the Licensing Board and had previously failed to disclose his convictions at a previous hearing.

Councillor Ronnie McNicol, former chair of the Board, previously gave Shergill a warning about any future conduct.

After the board members adjourned to make their decision, Councillor Tom Marshall moved that Shergill have his personal licence endorsed.

Shergill's personal licence was suspended for two months.
