SELFISH drivers are being target in a new police crackdown on illegal parking in Irvine.

Last weekend officers from the Irvine Locality Policing Team issued nine fixed penalty notices to drivers for alleged parking offences in the town centre area between Friday, April 29 April to Monday, May 2.

The clampdown comes following an increasing number of complaints from Irvine residents, fed up with rogue drivers ditching their cars on double yellow lines to the inconvenience of law abiding motorists.

As well as slapping tickets on bad drivers, officers have also been out and about engaging with drivers and local businesses to raise awareness on the restrictions in the area and direct them to available parking.

Sergeant Jason Peter, of the Irvine Locality Policing Team, said in one alleged incident a motorist had actually dumped his car on the roundabout between Seagate and High Street, obstructing the road for everyone else.

He said: “For a number of weeks we have been engaging with motorists and have publicised the restrictions on our social media accounts and in the local press - this week we have have began a period of enforcement activity as drivers continue to flout the restrictions.

“One driver was issued a conditional offer for causing an unnecessary obstruction by allegedly parking their vehicle on a roundabout preventing vehicles from turning at the junction of High Street and Seagate.

“We will continue to work with the Local Authority and the community to address issues of local concern.”
