A MAN caught drink driving in Kilwinning will now have to cycle to his work at Prestwick Airport after being hit with a driving ban.

Stewart Saxton admitted drink driving in Lauchlan Way on April 10.

The 21-year-old, who now lives in Troon, was driving his Vauxhall Corsa in the restricted 30mph zone at around 1.10am when he was stopped by police for only driving with sidelights on.

Saxton’s car was seen to swerve across the carriageway and when officers stopped him, he immediately left the car.

Police noted he was unsteady on his feet and slurring his words.

After failing the roadside breath test, Saxton was taken to Saltcoats Police Office where he gave a reading of 85 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - exceeding the limit of 22 microgrammes.

He made no response to caution and charge by police.

Saxton, a first offender with a clean licence, pleaded guilty to the offence at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week.

Defence solicitor Brian Holliman said his client wished to apologise to the court and did not intend on driving on the night in question.

Mr Holliman said Saxton, a driver of three-and-a-half years, was “somewhat shocked” that his reading was so high.

The solicitor believed Saxton could benefit from a period on a drink drive rehabilitation course.

A full-time check-in agent at Prestwick Airport, Saxton’s job was initially in jeopardy but was assured that he would keep his employment.

Mr Holliman insisted Saxton now intends on cycling to the airport from Troon for his 4am early shift.

Presiding Sheriff Shirley Foran fined Saxton £270 and disqualified him from driving for 18 months.

If he completes a drink drive rehabilitation programme, Saxton’s ban will be reduced by four months.
