JOYRIDERS face having their cars seized if they misbehave during this weekend's car cruise event in Irvine.

Police have issued a stern warning to any potential troublemakers ahead of the Irvine Car Cruise event this Sunday, May 22.

Last year the event attracted more than 1,000 cars and their owners and while trouble was kept to a minimum, officers warn that anyone caught being anti social, speeding, wheel spinning or general causing a disturbance will be dealt with and prosecuted.

Other drivers have also been told to expect to experience delays and congestion due to the high volumes of traffic in the town.

A spokesman for Irvine Police Division said: "We are aware of a car cruise event taking place in Irvine on Sunday, May 22.

"We understand that the majority of those attending are not intent on breaking the law.

Those who do choose to participate in antisocial behaviour, such as speeding, wheel-spinning or creating a disturbance will be dealt with by officers and could face prosecution or have their vehicle seized.

"This event may lead to some congestion and possible delays in the area."

Officers have assured the public there will be a strong police presence at the event and they will be on the lookout for anyone making a nuisance of themselves or driving off-road.

The spokesman added: "Please keep your vehicle on the road and use the designated car-parking areas; driving off-road will not be tolerated and can cause damage to the environment.

"We will have Road Policing Unit officers on patrol in the area of the event and vehicles patrolling on routes leading to and from the event.

"Drivers are asked to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that all documents (licence, tax, insurance etc.) are in order.

Inspector Dean Pennington, head of Ayrshire’s Road Policing Unit added: “Sunday, May 22 sees the Irvine Car Cruise return to the Irvine Beachpark.

"Last year there were approximately 1,000 cars at the event, competing for trophies for their cars.

"The overwhelming number of drivers behaved in a very responsible manner, but a small number were reported to the court for driving offences including driving on grassed areas.

“Police Scotland will have patrols, both with local officers and Road Policing patrols, and will enforce driving offences both at the event and on the roads leading to and from Irvine. I would ask that those attending the event drive in a safe manner and consider other road users and residents.

"If you are attending the event please enjoy it, share this post, act responsibly and encourage others not to spoil it for the majority.

Please take time to speak with officers at the event and share any local concerns."
