A KILWINNING DJ who threatened to kill two people in a school has dodged a jail sentence.

Former Irvine Beat FM presenter Gordon Conway, 44, caused “absolute chaos” when he made the threats to a Stirlingshire school last year.

The married Claremont Crescent man claimed he was offered sex by his former lover - who has since died - if he made the call. It was claimed she threatened to tell his wife about their affair if he didn’t phone the school.

She allegedly hoped another man she accused of sexual assault would be blamed.

Falkirk Sheriff Court was told last week that a classroom assistant received the call at 2.35pm on April 20, 2015 when the 370-pupil school was still in session.

An unknown male, who turned out to be Conway, said: “It’s not looking good. I’ve got a gun and I’m going to kill them both.”

Prosecutor Mhairi Alexander said the same man had made a series of earlier calls to the school, which made the woman think that the “both” he was referring to was a pupil and their mother.

On March 19, Conway, a civil servant, had phoned the school office and asked if a pupil was in class.

He was asked who he was, and replied simply, “a friend of his” before putting down the phone. Four days later he phoned again just after the children were let out, saying he had seen the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, being picked up by his mum, adding “she’s looking good”.

Miss Alexander said against that background, the call about the gun left the woman “particularly shaken”. She immediately told the headmistress, who called police.

The depute fiscal said: “As a result of the call a large number of police officers, including specialist firearms officers, were sent to the school.”

Children were kept inside and the building was “secured”.

Ten minutes later, the school office phone went again. This time, a senior clerical assistant heard Conway say: “I called 20 minutes ago. Just making sure you heard what I said.”

Conway, who had used his own mobile, was traced and arrested.

Defence solicitor Mike Lowrie said Conway, a first offender, had become involved in “a strange scenario”.

He said he had been “put up to it” by his late lover with whom he’d had an “on-off relationship”.

Mr Lowrie said: “He was offered certain rewards, let’s put it that way, for making the calls.

“She offered to have sex with him to make these calls, and she also threatened to make disclosures to Mr Conway’s wife.

“She was on Facetime when the calls were made, listening to what was going on.

“She had made an allegation of sexual assault against a man, and she thought the calls might be attributed to that man.”

He said three weeks later the woman appeared in private at Falkirk Sheriff Court in relation to the matter herself but has since died.

Mr Lowrie said Conway, whose wife accompanied him to court, “seems to be a man who is easily led”.

Sheriff Derek Livingston said: “I would have had every justification in imposing a custodial sentence, however with a lot of hesitation I have decided not to do that, for a variety of reasons.

“This was a very serious matter in which the police were involved and there was a lot of genuine distress caused to those working in the school, and others.

“But you have otherwise led a blameless lifestyle, and continue to do so.”

Conway was sentenced to 300 hours’ unpaid work, plus two years’ supervision, and made subject to a restriction of liberty order for eight months, during which time he will have to wear a tag and observe a 7pm to 7am curfew

Until recently, Conway was still an on-air presenter with Irvine Beat FM who said they had no knowledge of the case until after his conviction.

A spokesperson confirmed he was immediately taken off air and removed as a volunteer.
