EMERGENCY crews were called to an Irvine retail park after a car was ram-raided into a shop wall in freak accident.

The white Audi convertible was parked in a space outside of the former Harvey’s furniture store - which is now empty - when a black Mercedes somehow lost control and drove straight into it on Saturday afternoon (June 11).

The impact of the crash moved the Audi completely out of its space and forced it partially through the wall of the shop, which sits between Sports Direct and the Next outlet in Riverway Retail Park.

Miraculously, no one was injured but the 79-year-old driver of the Mercedes was given precautionary checks by paramedics before being taken to Crosshouse Hospital for further checks.

Firefighters, police and ambulance were on the scene within minutes and worked fast to ensure that anyone involved was not injured and the building was safe.

One eye witness who’s Hyundai 4x4 was parked in the space next to the Audi said it was “astonishing” no one was injured or killed.

Asking not to be named, he said: “I had been shopping with my wife and had come out of Sports Direct, literally seconds after the crash happened. I am so glad because if we had been anywhere near it, it could have been catastrophic.

"It’s astonishing that on one was hurt, given how busy the retail park was that day.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “At around 2.45pm on Saturday, June 11 crews responded to a call from police reporting a collision at Riverway Retail Park.

"We immediately sent crews from Kilmarnock and Dreghorn as well as heavy rescue crew from Easterhouse in Glasgow.

“Firefighters made the scene safe and assessed the damage to the building which was then passed to the building control officers.

“Crews left the scene at around 4pm.

“No one was trapped but one man, a driver of one of the cars, received precautionary checks by ambulance crews at the scene before being taken to Crosshouse Hospital for further checks.”
