POLICE in North Ayrshire are urging local businesses to remain vigilant after an attempted scam.
The incident, which occurred in Irvine, is commonly referred to as ‘Ringing the Changes’ or ‘Change Raising’.
It involves someone asking for a sum of cash to be changed into notes of a smaller denomination.
While doing this, they deliberately confuse staff so as to obtain more money than they originally handed over.
Sergeant Jason Peter said: “Officers are continuing enquiries into this incident and are reviewing CCTV to identify those responsible.
“This is a common scam and while it can have many variations and often seem innocent, businesses are left out of pocket.
“We are encouraging staff who work in retail or other businesses to review their policy for giving out change. Often a polite refusal can stop you falling victim to criminals.”
Anyone with information on this incident or other crime in their community is asked to contact Police Scotland by calling 101 (in an emergency always dial 999). They can also contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained.
