A WOMAN caught nearly five times over the drink drive limit has been fined and banned.

Rebecca Stewart, of Irvine’s Titchfield Way, admitted failing to provide a specimen of breath to police after being caught driving in Kirkland Terrace, Springside on June 4.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard last week how police were on patrol at around 1.35am in the Springside area travelling in the direction of Dreghorn.

Their attention was drawn to a number of men in the street and a vehicle stationary in the middle of the street with its lights on.

Police thought there was going to be a disturbance and decided to enter Kirkland Terrace.

The stationary white Vauxhall Corsa turned onto the correct side of the road and police followed it a short distance towards Dreghorn.

But they eventually signalled the car to pull over and found Stewart and a male passenger in the front seats.

Officers could smell alcohol and Stewart was asked to provide a specimen of breath.

The 35-year-old mum of two said she had drank a couple of glasses of wine before adding she “probably should not be driving”.

Stewart tested 105 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath - almost five times the drink drive limit.

She was arrested and taken to Kilmarnock Police Office where she was asked to provide two further samples.

The first of these was successful and gave a reading of 103 microgrammes but she failed to provide a second sample.

When asked if there was a reason for this, she replied “no”.

Stewart became visibly upset and police were of the opinion she would not be able to provide the second sample.

At court last week, Stewart, a first offender, pleaded guilty to the charge.

Sheriff Michael Anderson fined Stewart £240 and disqualified her from driving for 16 months.
