IRVINE’S MP has welcomed potential new investment at The Big Idea.

Dr Philippa Whitford is “delighted” to hear that the former invention centre on the Ardeer Peninsula could be weeks away from a takeover.

As the Times exclusively revealed last week, Chinese investors are seriously interested in purchasing the building.

The Central Ayrshire MP, pictured right, has spoken openly in the past about her hopes for the site - which shut for good in 2003 - to be restored and put to good use.

Opened in 2000 as part of the Millenium Project, the £14million invention centre struggled to compete with Glasgow Science Centre and closed after three turgid years.

Dr Whitford previously shared her ideas for The Big Idea to be transformed into a marine life centre focusing both on the environment as well as exploring Ayrshire’s history.

However, a marina, residential development and a power station have all been touted to replace the NPL Estates-owned building.

Nevertheless, Dr Whitford is happy talks are progressing and is hoping for an outcome that benefits the community.

Speaking this week, she said: “I’m delighted to hear that investors could be interested in rescuing the Big Idea.

“It is much too valuable a resource to have lain empty for all these years.

“Obviously, I don’t yet have any details, but I very much hope that firm proposals emerge which will see it bring public benefit to the communities of Irvine and the Harbourside.”
