IRVINE West’s Labour candidate says she will fight to restore investment for Irvine Royal Academy.

Louise McPhater, above, believes it is “unacceptable” for the school to receive less funding than was previously announced by North Ayrshire Council.

It was revealed in June that planned £8million investments in Irvine Royal, Kilwinning and Auchenharvie Academies had dropped to £6million in order for the council to plug an overspend in the Health and Social Care Partnership.

The initial investment was set aside in the NAC budget back in February.

Now Ms McPhater says if elected on Thursday, August 11, she will fight to restore the £2million cut.

Speaking this week, she said: “Every child who attends Irvine Royal Academy deserves the best possible learning environment.

“The school is one of only three secondary schools in North Ayrshire that hasn’t already been rebuilt or the work is planned.

“It’s therefore unacceptable for the SNP to slash vital investment in the school, that was fought for and won by Labour councillors campaigning, by over 25 per cent.”

The Labour candidate added: “I want to make it clear to the people of Irvine – if you elect me to represent you on August 11, I will fight to have our missing millions restored.

“I will work tirelessly to ensure that our area gets the deal that it deserves and our young people get the opportunity to reach their full potential.”
