RAIN? What rain?

The heavens may have opened on Marymass Saturday but it had no chance of dampening the spirits of the thousands who took to the streets of Irvine.

Families shrugged off the wet weather to line the town centre and Irvine Moor to celebrate Marymass 2016 - and the crowning of Queen Abbi McLeish.

A colourful array of floats kick-started a fantastic day of fun, setting off from Golffields Road following the annual Judging of the Horses.

From there, hundreds waved to the floats, kids, horses and groups who brought fantastic music and colour to the parade before its arrival at the Townhouse.

From there, Queen Abbi was joined by Marys Danni Murphy, Alex Bannon, Sophie Kirkwood and Chloe Watson to be cheered on by the Irvine crowd.

Guests in attendance to watch the festivities included Provost Joan Sturgeon, North Ayrshire Council Leader Willie Gibson, Philippa Whitford MP, Ruth Maguire MSP and Marymass Festival Committee Chair, Pat McPhee.

The celebrations came to a head when Queen Abbi was crowned by Mary Kerr - wife of Carters Captain, Danny Kerr.

Irvine Moor once again hosted a whole range of fun following Abbi’s inaugural speech.

Punters flocked to enjoy the fun fair and the unsurprisingly packed-out Paddock.

And then came the Greasy Pole.

It was yet another battle to win perhaps the world’s most coveted ham and it was Scott Gray who came out on top for 2016.

The annual Marymass horse racing, stalls, live music and the first-ever tug of war final kept everyone happy on the Moor.

The celebrations ended at 5pm when Queen Abbi and her Marys returned to their carriages leaving the revellers to enjoy the rest of the fun - and a chance to ring out their clothes!
