FURIOUS Harbourside residents are fed-up with sleepless nights - caused by non-stop noise from an Irvine factory.

Ardagh Glass have this week come under fire for apparently carrying out work through the early hours of the morning.

And one resident claims the racket is so bad that she wakes up around 30 times a night!

The glass packaging firm are one of Irvine’s biggest employers with a 225 workforce and opened a new £15million flint furnace in November last year.

But a group of nearby neighbours are sick of noise all through the night by workers.

Former professional boxer and Bimson Place resident Ryan Brawley lives just yards away from the Ardagh plant in Portland Place.

He captured videos clearly highlighting the noise coming from the factory and claims the company deny causing any nuisance through the night.

Ryan said: “It was alright when we first moved in but the last year-and-a-half has been a nightmare. They’ve started doing maintenance work on the furnance and we’ve actually felt vibrations on our house.

“At first it didn’t bother us too much but it’s getting to 3am and the kids aren’t able to sleep and it’s gone too far.”

He added: “I know some of the people that work there and I know it’s nice in the summer but they’re supposed to have the windows shut and turn the fans off.

“Me and a couple of other people have complained now but Ardagh aren’t interested.”

Gottries Road resident Nikki Cuthbert and her two kids, aged four and six, have endured more than one sleepless night since moving to the street in January.

Nikki, 28, said: “We moved in back in January and the noise has been horrendous. My bedroom faces right onto Ardagh and that’s all you can hear. I’ve had to move the kids to the front of the house to sleep now because they keep getting disturbed by it.

“I got a FitBit to monitor my sleep because of it and it told me I woke up about 30 times a night.”

The boss of the Irvine site said the company are taking the complaints seriously and have invited residents to meet with them.

Graeme Shepherd, Director of Operations at Ardagh Glass in Irvine, said:

“We are aware of the noise complaint, which has been made by a couple of local residents who live in the vicinity of the factory, and we are investigating the source in conjunction with the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA).

“At the same time, we have engaged an expert noise specialist to help us to identify any irregularities or changes to the local area that may have contributed to any problem. The factory has always operated continuously 24/7, and there have been no recent changes to night time operations that would increase the noise level.

“We are taking the complaints seriously, and have asked the experts to report back to us as soon as possible with their recommendations.

“In the meantime we will be inviting the residents concerned to meet us so that we can update them on the situation and listen to their views."
