FIRST Minister Nicola Sturgeon has shared her memories of the Magnum.

The SNP leader has often publicly recalled fond times spent at Frosty’s ice disco as well as learning to swim at the Magnum pool.

But she has staunchly defended the construction of the £20million Portal Leisure Centre in the middle of town.

Speaking to the Times, the First Minister said: “I have many happy memories of the Magnum, which was an iconic centre for anyone who was brought up in the west of Scotland during the 1980s.

“I learnt to swim there and spent many a Saturday night at Frosty’s ice rink disco listening to Duran Duran with my school friends.

“While many people were sad to see it close, it’s great that Irvine will now have a brand-new community sports facility in the shape of the Portal Leisure Centre when it opens next year.”
