TWO people were hospitalised after a serious crash in Irvine at the weekend.

The incident occurred just before lunchtime on Saturday, October 15 in Middleton Road, Girdle Toll.

Two cars, both containing single drivers, were involved in a collision in the street.

An elderly male driver had to be cut free from his vehicle while the other driver, an elderly female, briefly lost consciousness.

Police, fire and ambulance crews all attended the scene and both were taken to Crosshouse Hospital for treatment.

Station Manager Derek Davidson, from the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service, said: “From the two cars involved one elderly male driver had been removed prior to the arrival of the fire service and he was suffering from chest pains and lacerations to his face and head.

"An elderly female driver in the second vehicle was trapped within the wreckage and initially lost consciousness for a period of time.”

He added: “The fire crews and paramedics agreed an extrication plan to remove the casualty from the vehicle and firefighters undertook the rescue using hydraulic cutting equipment.

"The lady was also suffering from chest pains and both casualties were removed to Crosshouse Hospital by paramedics for further assessment and treatment.”
