IRVINE’S new £20 million leisure facility The Portal will be officially open next month, after previous expectations it would be ready next week.

After a long wait, residents will finally be able to enjoy its new state-of-the-art leisure facilities in February.

The council says it is currently in discussion with contractors to determine an ideal opening date.

However, clubs, groups and schools will be invited on January 27 to try out the new facilities ahead of its official opening.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We are making good progress at The Portal and the finishing touches are being put in place.

“We will be holding further meetings with the contractors this week to determine when best to open the facility.

“We will invite partner clubs, groups and schools to try out the facilities from 27 January. This will allow KA Leisure and Council staff to test the gym, pool and other features in a controlled environment before a full opening to the public in February.

“We also plan to hold a formal opening later this year with a high profile guest.”

The facilities on offer will include a 25m x six lane swimming pool, teaching/warm up pool with changing facilities and spectator seating, a six court multi-use sports hall for all indoor sports, community facilities, a fitness suite and multi-use studio and cafe.

The restored Townhouse will also offer a new venue for civic events, exhibitions, artists-in-residence and wedding ceremonies.
