It was a night to remember for North Ayrshire council youth services manager Angela Morrell as she picked up a top honour at the National Youth Worker of the Year Awards 2017.
Angela won the Inspirational Leadership category at the awards which celebrate the outstanding commitment, service and impact that youth workers, managers and partners have on the lives of the young people of Scotland.
The award was made in recognition of the way Angela has ensured that North Ayrshire continues to lead the way in providing great programmes for young people.
Angela said: “It’s a huge honour but I know this is very much recognition for the work carried out by the whole of our team here in North Ayrshire.
“Everyone works together to ensure that our young people are given a real voice and that we listen to it.”
Angela is team leader for North Ayrshire Council’s Youth Participation and Empowerment Team. She currently leads a team of 42 staff including youth workers, Modern Apprentices and active school co-ordinators, and also manages more than 80 sessional staff.
The team work with 11 to 25- year olds, providing a range of informal learning in schools and the community. Their recent achievements have included involving 5,000 youngsters in the council’s budget process.
Audrey Sutton, executive director for connected communities, said: “Sometimes awards feel particularly appropriate – and this is one of these occasions.
“Angela inspires not just the young people and staff she comes into contact with, but also those partners with whom she has developed sector leading multi-agency approaches to changing young lives. I am very proud of what she and her team continue to achieve.”
The awards turned out to be a triple celebration for North Ayrshire as Angela’s victory was one of a hat-trick of awards.
Graeme Johnston picked up the Full-time Youth Worker of the Year award while colleague Hollie Watkins received the Part-Time Youth Worker of the Year award.
Both work with Arran Youth Foundations, a Brodick-based charity supported by North Ayrshire Council.
