Kilwinning resident Nairn McDonald has been selected as the Labour Party candidate for Central Ayrshire at the General Election.

Nairn, 21, has lived in North Ayrshire his whole life. He attended Kilwinning Academy before studying at the University of West of Scotland.

Nairn served two terms as a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament for Cunninghame South and was involved in leading their “Poverty: See It, Change It” campaign.

He was also involved in the votes at 16 campaign, the Love Equality campaign for same sex marriage and the One Fair Wage campaign for a Living Wage for young people.

Nairn won MSYP of the Year in 2014 Nairn is actively involved in his community and is currently the Secretary of Kilwinning Community Council.

He has also been involved in Kilwinning Community Events, who organise the town’s firework display, and Promoting Kilwinning, who organise the Segdoune Carnival and the Christmas light switchon.

Speaking after his selection, Nairn said: “I am deeply honoured to have been selected to fight the Central Ayrshire constituency for Labour.

“In 2015 local people gave the SNP a chance. They believed them when they said they were ‘Stronger for Scotland’ but all we ended up with was a Tory Government.

“The fact is that voters at this election will face a clear choice between a Tory Government that will work for the rich or a Labour Government that will work for the many. The SNP cannot win the election and every vote for the SNP will help Theresa May back into Number 10. That is exactly what happened in 2015.

“On the 8th June we have the chance to elect a Labour MP for Central Ayrshire and a Labour Government that will kick out the Bedroom Tax for good and get rid of the Tories' despicable rape clause.

“Before that though we have the chance to elect Labour Councillors who will put our area first. Labour’s record on North Ayrshire Council since the SNP resigned shows us exactly what having a Labour Council means for people and I will be spending every spare minute between now and the close of polls on Thursday fighting for every Labour vote.

“I will then be taking Labour’s positive vision for transforming our country to every corner of Central Ayrshire to help elect a Labour Government.”

Labour have also selected a young candidate to fight the North Ayrshire seat.

Kilwinning resident Christopher Rimicans has been selected as the Labour Party candidate for North Ayrshire and Arran at the General Election.

Christopher has lived in North Ayrshire his whole life. He attended St Matthew’s Academy before studying at Strathclyde University.

Christopher volunteers for many groups and last year won a volunteering award from The Ayrshire Community Trust.

He has been involved in projects such as collecting donations for the North Ayrshire Foodbank.

Christopher is currently on a seasonal contract with North Ayrshire Council with North Ayrshire Council as a Sports Coach.

He is a piper with Johnstone Pipe Band and part of the teaching team at Irvine District Pipe Band. Christopher hit the national headlines in 2014 when he spoke at Scottish Labour Party conference against Trident.

At this year’s conference he spoke in favour of Labour’s federalism proposals and gave an impassioned speech in support of Ardrossan retaining the Arran ferry.

Speaking after his selection, Christopher said: “It is a great honour to have been selected as the Labour candidate for North Ayrshire and Arran.

“North Ayrshire is my home and I am standing to give my family, friends and neighbours the strong voice that they deserve.

“We badly need a Labour Government who will end austerity, deliver a £10 minimum wage and create an economy that works for working people.”
