Labour took control of North Ayrshire Council after a vote at Cunninghame House this afternoon.

The minority administration, to be led by Councillor Joe Cullinane, will see the majority of the cabinet that was in place before the election back in their posts, with the only exception being Robert Foster replacing the now retired Peter McNamara as the portfolio holder for Health and Social Care.

Ian Clarkson will continue as the Provost of North Ayrshire and Cllr Robert Barr, councillor for Dalry and West Kilbride, will serve a second term as the Depute Provost of the council.

Proposals for Leader and Depute of North Ayrshire Council came from both Labour and the SNP with the latter winning a vote by 16-11 out of a possible 33 votes.

Previously both the SNP and Labour had said prior to the meeting that they would not be forming a coalition after Labour rejected the SNPs offer after the election.
