A woman was overjoyed after her partner proposed on the finishing line of Irvine's Race for Life.

Emma Napier, 25, agreed to marry her partner Matthew Findlay at Race for Life Irvine on Sunday, June 4

She said: “I’d just crossed the finish line of the Race for Life 10K when my boyfriend Matthew asked to marry me.

“I actually dropped my Race for Life medal and the water bottle in shock when I turned round to see him down on one knee holding out a diamond ring.

"It was the best moment ever and I couldn’t believe it. Matthew and I were invited up on to stage to wave to the crowd. It’s a day we’ll never forget and one we’ll hopefully be able to tell our own children and even grandchildren about one day.

“I was part of a team running Race for Life inspired by Elsa McBurney, a very brave girl who is just six and fighting cancer right now.

"Cancer Research UK will always have a special place in my heart and I’ll do everything I can to support the charity.”

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and marathon events which raises millions of pounds every year to help fund life-saving research. Last year, around 37,612 people took part in Race for Life in Scotland and raised almost £2.5 million.

One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before.

Survival rates have doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.
