An Irvine school keeps having its sports activities scuppered by a frequently water logged pitch.

The school’s Parent Council says the issue has been going on for years now but the council still hasn’t done anything about it.

Chair Rachel Gillespie told the Irvine Times: “For a number of years now, the playing fields at the school have had problems with becoming water logged.

“Following the building of an extension on to the school in 2013, the flooding problems have become far worse.

“The flooding has resulted in our children having very little access to this large play area each year.

“We are also dismayed to once again have no outdoor sports day for the children this year as the field is too wet to be used.

“This is not the first time that this has happened in recent years leaving both children and parents disappointed.

“The council is very aware of this problem and we have been pursuing them now for a number of years to try to get some work carried out to fix the problems.

“The school role has increased significantly over recent years with just under 400 pupils in the school at the moment.

“The playground alone does not provide sufficient space for the children to play properly at break times and lunch times so access to the grassed area is very important.

“We feel like we are continually being fobbed off by the Property Management and Investment department while our children continue to suffer the restrictions this flooding is causing.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We have been working to develop a scheme which would alleviate flooding issues at Woodlands Primary’s playing field.

“The plans and specifications for the scheme have now been drawn up. Funding for the scheme will be considered in the next few months, alongside other priorities, as part of our overall Capital Investment Programme.”
