An Irvine man who fought and died in the Spanish Civil War will be honoured in the Townhouse this week.
A memorial gathering will be held for Irvine man John Smith who fought and died fighting General Franco’s fascist forces in the 1930s.
John Smith was born in Irvine in 1906 with his family home in Clark Drive.
In January 1937 John left Irvine to join the British Battalion of the International Brigades in Spain, who fought to defend the elected Spanish Government against the fascist forces of General Franco.
John was in action a number of times during the conflict and but was eventually killed at Ebro on September 8 1938.
The TUC’S memorial gathering this year will take place at 2pm on Sunday, September 10 in the Townhouse.
Arthur West, of Irvine and North Ayrshire Trades Union Council said anyone who was interested was very welcome to attend the gathering, which will involve some short speeches and messages about the life and times of John Smith.
Arthur West said: “John Smith was a genuine hero who gave his life fighting against the forces of fascism.
“It is fitting that his courage and humanity should be marked at the gathering in the Townhouse.
