The Romanian national had followed the young girl to the car park behind Iceland near Arthurlie Street on August 7 last year.

He grabbed her by the hair, threatened her with a piece of glass and forced her off her bike before the sickening attack.

Glasgow Times:

Ciornei was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow today.

He will be sentenced at a later date.

Detective Chief Inspector Gillian Patrick said: "Samuel Ciornei is a dangerous individual and we welcome the result from court. This was an incident which shocked the local community of Barrhead however I would like to reassure people that this type of crime is relatively rare.

"This was an incredibly traumatic experience for the young girl concerned, who had simply been out in the local area before being attacked by Ciornei, who was a stranger to her and whose motivation was not only sexual but opportunistic as he also robbed her of her personal belongings. I would like to commend the bravery of the young girl, who stood and gave evidence to the jury of her ordeal despite it being a very difficult experience to revisit.

"I would like to take this opportunity to assure anyone who may have been a victim of any sexual crime that Police Scotland will take any reports of such crime extremely seriously. We can provide you with the support you require."
