PROVOST Ian Clarkson and Council Leader Joe Cullinane had a smashing time as they took part in an ‘omelette challenge’ this week.

The councillors took part in two head-to-head challenges in Irvine’s Rivergate shopping centre with shoppers stopping by the catch their culinary skills.

The first challenge was a timed challenge to make a three-egg omelette – which was won by the Council Leader.

The second friendly competition saw both make omelettes of their own creation – with the Council Leader going for a chorizo-based concoction while the Provost added some tomatoes and mushrooms.

Members of Eglinton Growers and Fairlie Growers were then asked to choose the tastiest dish, with the Leader once again coming out on top.

Councillor Joe Cullinane, Leader of North Ayrshire Council, said: “My cooking skills can sometimes leave a lot to be desired …. so it was good to rise to the occasion on Friday!

“While it was a lot of fun for both of us, the real point of it was to get the message out there that it doesn’t take long or cost a lot to put together a really healthy and nutritious meal.

“That was what Friday was all about. Hopefully, people picked up some really useful tips and advice throughout the day and will take that home with them.”

The event was held as part Challenge Poverty Week and included drop-in stalls at the Rivergate, featuring live cookery demonstrations by the Council’s award-winning catering team showing how to feed a family of four for a fiver.

Eglinton Growers and Fairlie Growers were also at the Rivergate to promote the benefits of growing your own fruit and veg, while youngsters were invited to create their own healthy, fruit smoothie.
