Police have warned residents to stay safe if using fireworks.

Police say that while watching fireworks can be great fun for children, figures show more often than not it’s children rather than adults who are injured by fireworks.

Sergeant Jason Peter, of the Irvine Locality Policing Team, said: "We have officers working alongside local crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in response to calls for assistance and reports of illegal bonfires.

“There are however some basic steps and precautions which should be taken to reduce the risk posed and prevent injury.

"We would always suggest that you attend an official organised display but if you are planning a DIY display or bonfire visit the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service website for information on staying safe:

"To report incidents of antisocial behaviour and criminality call Police Scotland on 101 (in an emergency always dial 999).

"In the event of a fire call the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on 999."
