A LOCAL MSP has voiced his support for a complete ban on fox hunting.

Ross Greer, Green MSP for the West of Scotland has joined the League Against Cruel Sports and Fergus the Fox to pledge support for the law which protects wild mammals from being chased and hunted for sport and has given his commitment to vote for a complete ban on fox hunting. The Scottish Government is currently consulting on strengthening the Protection of Wild Mammals (Scotland) Act fifteen years since it came into force in 2002, following a review by Lord Bonomy.

A campaign by the League to strengthen the current Act has been supported by over 20,000 members of the public who have signed their petition.

Green MSP Alison Johnstone has also announced her intention to lodge a private members bill which would go further than the Bonomy review and implement an outright ban on fox hunting for sport, given the evidence that the 2002 Act has failed.

Ross Greer MSP said:: “The public overwhelmingly see fox hunting as a barbaric relic. I’m more than happy to give my support to the League’s campaign to have the current law strengthened, given that it clearly isn’t preventing exactly the kind of fox hunting it was supposed to.

“I’m also more than happy to support my Green colleague Alison Johnstone’s proposal that we make the final step on this journey and just ban fox hunting completely. It’s entirely unnecessary and everything to do with sport rather than pest control. This relic from another era should have gone a long time ago.”
